With the degree of oxidizability, basic slag performs different color, thus slag color is the sign of the deoxidation degree of slag and molten steel. When the oxidizability is high, slag is black, with the oxidizability of slag goes weaker, which means deoxidization of slag , the color of slag becomes lighter as black→grey→brown→yellow→light yellow→white(FeO+MnO normally less than 1%). Black: FeO+MnO>2%. Practice has proved that this process is one of the important conditions to ensure the quality and normal operation of casting billet. In the early 1970s, the process was successfully applied to slab continuous casting in our country and solved the problem of slab longitudinal crack, and then was gradually popularized and applied. In recent years, a series of protective slag has been established, Some special fluxes for continuous casting of special steel are developed, which provide necessary conditions for further development of continuous casting in China.
