Slag observation techniques for ladle refining

With the degree of oxidizability, basic slag performs different color, thus slag color is the sign of the deoxidation degree of slag and molten steel. When the oxidizability is high, slag is black, with the oxidizability of slag goes weaker, which means deoxidization of slag, the color of slag becomes lighter as black→grey→brown→yellow→light yellow→white(FeO+MnO normally less than 1%).
Black: FeO+MnO>2%. Means bad deoxidation, further deoxidation from slag is required, aluminium grains, accelerator, slag regulator, multifunctional desulfurizer and compound desulfurizer can be used to do it.

Grey to brown: FeO+MnO=1~2%. A certain degree of deoxidization is required.
Yellow to white: With good deoxidization. Yellow means there is desulphurization, this kind of slag will break into powder after cooling.
